Regular Class members earn 1.60% per year of service. The value rises to 1.63% at age 63 or 31 years, 1.65% at 64 or 32 years, and 1.68% at 65 or 33 years. Special Risk and elected classes use higher values. This estimate covers the Pension Plan only, not the Investment Plan.

This does not replace the official estimate. Verify your service credit, salary average, membership tier or class, age and option reductions, and every plan-specific limit with the retirement system before making a decision.

Formula and class assumptions

The FRS Pension Plan benefit equals years of creditable service × the percentage value for your membership class × average final compensation. For a Regular Class teacher, the percentage value is 1.60% per year, so the applied percentage is 1.60 × your years of service, up to the point where the age or service bonuses raise it.

Average final compensation is the average of your highest five fiscal years of covered salary if you first enrolled before July 1, 2011, and your highest eight fiscal years if you first enrolled on or after July 1, 2011. Each fiscal year begins July 1, so a calendar-year or "last five years" shortcut can misstate it. Pension Plan vesting is six years for members enrolled before July 1, 2011 and eight years for those enrolled on or after that date.

Retiring before normal retirement age applies a 5% reduction for each year you are early. Enter that reduction directly. Members who join the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) freeze the formula at DROP entry.

Final average salary basis: Highest 5 fiscal years if first enrolled before July 1, 2011; highest 8 fiscal years if first enrolled on or after July 1, 2011. Each fiscal year starts July 1.

Worked example

$55,000 AFC × 1.60% × 25 years = $22,000 / yearAbout $1,833 per month before an early-age reduction, the health insurance subsidy, taxes and deductions. Reaching an age or service bonus threshold raises the percentage value.

What this calculator does not decide

  • The Investment Plan, which is a defined-contribution account with no formula.
  • Whether you have met the 6-year or 8-year vesting requirement for your enrollment date.
  • The 5%-per-year early retirement reduction, which you must enter.
  • The Retiree Health Insurance Subsidy and any DROP accumulation.
