Short answer

For retirements now, STRS Ohio pays an unreduced Defined Benefit pension at 32 years of service at any age, or at age 65 with 5 years. A smaller, permanently reduced pension is available earlier. The 32-year threshold rises to 33 years in June 2035 and 34 years in June 2037.

At a glance

  • Unreduced now: 32 years any age, or age 65 with 5 years
  • Reduced: fewer years, but the pension is cut for life
  • The service requirement steps up to 33 (2035) then 34 (2037)

What the STRS Ohio chart is really telling you

STRS Ohio has two doors into a pension. One is age-based: reach age 65 with at least 5 years of contributing service and you can retire with a full (unreduced) benefit. The other is service-based: reach a set number of years and you can retire with a full benefit at any age, even in your fifties.

The service number is the part that keeps changing. For anyone retiring right now, the full-benefit service threshold is 32 years. STRS Ohio lowered it to 32 in a 2025 board decision, down from 34. That 32-year window is scheduled to last through May 2035.

A "reduced" benefit is not a penalty box. It simply means you are retiring before you have met a full-benefit rule, so STRS Ohio lowers the monthly amount so the pension can be paid over more years. The reduction is permanent — it does not disappear when you later reach 65.

The schedule: why your younger colleagues have a harder rule

STRS Ohio has published the future service thresholds in advance, so you can see exactly when the rule tightens. Through May 1, 2035, an unreduced pension needs 32 years. From June 1, 2035 through May 1, 2037, it needs 33 years. From June 1, 2037 onward, it needs 34 years.

This is a scheduled increase, not an inflation adjustment or a projection. A teacher who plans to hit 32 years in 2034 gets the 32-year rule. A teacher who would hit 32 years in 2036 needs to keep working to 33. Two people with identical careers can have different full-retirement dates purely because of when their 32nd year lands.

How the years turn into a dollar amount

Once you are eligible, the Defined Benefit formula is service credit multiplied by 2.2% multiplied by your final average salary. Final average salary is the average of your five highest years of earnings. So 32 years produces 32 × 2.2% = 70.4% of that five-year average, paid monthly for life.

An older, more generous formula rewarded members past 35 years of service with a higher multiplier. That enhanced calculation was phased out; do not assume a chart from a colleague who retired a decade ago still applies. Ask STRS Ohio for a current benefit estimate that uses today's formula and today's eligibility rule.

If you are in the STRS Ohio Combined Plan or Defined Contribution Plan rather than the Defined Benefit Plan, the eligibility chart above does not describe your account. Those plans have their own access rules, and the DC portion is a balance, not a service-based formula.

Checking your own number before you pick a date

Service credit is not the same as calendar years employed. Partial years, unpaid leave, part-time contracts, and purchased service can all move the total. The figure that matters is the one STRS Ohio has on file, visible in your Online Personal Account.

Before you commit to a retirement date, get an official estimate for at least two dates: the earliest date you could leave with a reduced benefit, and the date you would reach the unreduced service threshold. Put the monthly amounts side by side. The gap between a 27-year reduced pension and a 32-year unreduced pension is usually large enough to change the plan.

  • Confirm your service credit total in your STRS Ohio Online Personal Account.
  • Note the exact month your 32nd (or 33rd/34th) year is credited.
  • Request estimates for a reduced-benefit date and an unreduced-benefit date.
  • Ask whether any purchasable service would move your unreduced date earlier.

Reduced now, or wait for unreduced?

The reduced-benefit routes let you leave earlier, but the cut is permanent and it compounds over a long retirement. A teacher who retires at 27 years instead of working to 32 gives up five years of the higher multiplier and takes an actuarial reduction on top.

The trade is not always wrong — health, job conditions, and other income matter — but it should be a decision made with two real STRS Ohio estimates in hand, not an assumption that 65 fixes it later. It does not; the reduction stays.

Before you make a decision

  1. Confirm your service credit total in your STRS Ohio Online Personal Account.
  2. Identify the exact month you reach 32 (or 33/34) years.
  3. Request estimates for a reduced date and an unreduced date.
  4. Ask whether purchasable service could move your unreduced date earlier.
  5. Confirm which STRS Ohio plan you are in (Defined Benefit, Combined, or DC).

Questions people ask

How many years do I need to retire from STRS Ohio in 2026?

For an unreduced Defined Benefit pension at any age, you currently need 32 years of service. You can also retire unreduced at age 65 with 5 years. A permanently reduced benefit is available with fewer years.

Is the STRS Ohio service requirement going back up to 34 years?

Yes, on a published schedule. It stays at 32 years through May 1, 2035, rises to 33 years from June 1, 2035, and rises to 34 years from June 1, 2037.

Does a reduced STRS Ohio pension become unreduced when I turn 65?

No. If you retire under a reduced-benefit rule, the reduction is permanent. It does not disappear at 65 or at any later age.
