The current STRS Ohio Defined Benefit formula is a flat 2.2% per year of service on a five-year final average salary, matching the system's published Benefit Calculation Table (32 years = 70.4%, 35 years = 77%). This tool covers the DB Plan, not the Defined Contribution or Combined plans.

This does not replace the official estimate. Verify your service credit, salary average, membership tier or class, age and option reductions, and every plan-specific limit with the retirement system before making a decision.

Formula and class assumptions

The STRS Ohio Defined Benefit pension is the five-year final average salary multiplied by 2.2% for each year of service. Thirty years produces 66% of final average salary, 32 years produces 70.4%, and 35 years produces 77%, before any reduction. STRS Ohio's own Benefit Calculation Table for retirements from June 1, 2025 through May 1, 2035 uses this same flat 2.2% rate. The maximum unreduced benefit is 100% of final average salary.

Final average salary is the average of your five highest years of compensation. Retiring with an unreduced benefit currently requires any age with 32 years of service, or age 65 with five years, for retirement dates between June 1, 2025 and May 1, 2035; the service requirement steps up to 33 and then 34 years under the published schedule.

A reduced benefit is available earlier — currently any age with 27 years or age 60 with five years — with an actuarial reduction. Enter that reduction percentage to see its effect.

Final average salary basis: Average of your five highest years of earnings.

What this calculator does not decide

  • The Defined Contribution and Combined plans, which do not use this formula.
  • The exact age-based percentages for a reduced-benefit retirement, which appear on the STRS Ohio Benefit Calculation Table.
  • The actuarial reduction for a reduced-benefit retirement, which you must enter.
  • Health-care premiums, the partial COLA and tax withholding.
